“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
Growing up, going to Sunday School and Church and continuing ‘on & off’ over the years, I had never really thought about who wrote the Bible. Hmmm maybe I did, but it was never of any real importance to me. The Bible was God’s word and we should believe it, that was my thinking (if I ever did actually think about it).
So when I had my first Bible study with my Pastor the first lesson was on the Bible being the word of God. Everything that was written in the Bible was God’s word. When he said this, he looked at me waiting for me to perhaps argue or deny or question (I like asking questions 😛 ). But to me, it just made sense. I totally believed it, without question.
You see, for years I had been writing blogs and stories and many times those were written because I couldn’t get them out of my head and I just had to get them onto paper (or a computer screen 🙂 ). Or I would feel like writing something so would sit down at my computer and ask God to provide me with inspiration.
When I did my writing I always had a ‘voice’ in my head telling me what to write, so it really was not hard for me to believe that the Bible was the Word of God written through men who had been inspired by God.
But let’s explore this some more, as I know many people have said to me ‘Why would you believe in something that has been written by other men and take it as true’…
We were created by God, right? (Boy is that a BIG question for a lot of you 🙂 ). Because God created us, surely he would create a manual for us to operate by? When things are created by man there is always a manual right? I mean, you can’t put together a flat pack of furniture without having a manual, can you?
In all seriousness, God would not have created us without wanting/needing to communicate with us, to be able to guide us and help us live for him. So, there is no better way to do that except by in a book written by himself. God confirms this in 1 Thessalonians 5:21 “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
Over the years that has been many discussions around this very subject, many people believe it is just fables and legends, allegories to illustrate ideas and teachings. Others claim that the Bible contains the word of God but isn’t all the word of God. So to them, I ask – what parts are God’s word and what parts aren’t????
In 1 Corinthians 14:33 it says “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”
This means that God would not write something that would confuse us. Therefore, he would not write some of the Bible and leave the rest to other people to put in what they want to put in it.
So how could God write the Bible I hear you ask 🙂 I mean, did anyone ‘see’ God sitting at a table writing it? 🙂 🙂 Well, of course, he used humans as the instrument. 40 men over a period of about 1,600 years. Starting with Moses writing the Pentateuch around 1,500 B.C. And finishing with the apostle John completing his writings in around 97 A.D.
By the way Pentateuch means simply “five books”. In Greek, the Pentateuch (which Jews call the Torah) includes the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. (If you are ever talking to me in person don’t ever ask me to say this word.. cause I can’t wrap my tongue around it.)
According to the Scriptures, only three times did god Himself write. These times are as follows:
1. He wrote the 10 commandments
“And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.”
2. He wrote upon Belshazzar’s wall
“In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.”
3. Jesus wrote upon the ground in the Temple area (this is one of my favourite Scriptures 🙂 )
“This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.”
So, as I said, he used Humans as his instrument to write the Bible. But how??? God wrote through people whom He had chosen, by a process known as inspiration. As per II Timothy 3:16 – “All scripture is given by inspiration of God“.
The word inspired comes from the Greek word θεοπνευστος (THEOPNEUSTOS) which literally means ‘God Breathed’. So “All scripture is given by inspiration of God’, means that the writings are the result of a definite and certain influence that God exerted on the actual writers.
But how do we know this for real, I hear you ask 🙂 There are a few ways and we are going to explore those over the coming weeks, but let’s briefly look at ways that we know this is for real 🙂
1. The Bible’s own testimony
The Character of the Bible
2. Historical and Scientific verification
3. Witness in individual lives.
I have discovered two books that I really enjoy reading as part of my studies. They are:
I love learning about the Bible, the more I learn about it the more intrigued I become. But one of the first things we need to do is understand that the Bible WAS written by God. It IS God’s word and it has been written for us so that we can live for God.
